Description
Male ruby-throated hummingbird. He's cutting it close. Adult males usually leave for Mexico first, often by late July or early August. This one was still holding territory in mid-August, gorget still fully red, not yet worn down for the season. That red only exists at the right angle — structural colour, not pigment.
